ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨੇ 2001-2023 ਦੇ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੰਗਲਾਤ ਰਕਬੇ ਦਾ 1.4% ਹਿੱਸਾ ਗੁਆ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਧਰਤੀ ਹੇਠਲੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਤੇਜ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਘਟਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ, ਅੱਜ ਲਗਭਗ 1.68 ਲੱਖ ਹੈਕਟੇਅਰ ਰਕਬਾ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਦੇ ਬੰਜਰ ਹੋਣ ਵੱਲ ਵੱਧ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

ਪੰਜਾਬ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਸੰਕਟ ਦੇ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਹੈ। ਇੰਡੀਅਨ ਸਟੇਟ ਆਫ਼ ਫੋਰੈਸਟ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ (2023) ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਪਿਛਲੇ 22 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਾਜ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਅਤੇ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਵਰ ਦਾ 22% ਗੁਆ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।

ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਰੁੱਖ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਨੀਤੀ ਇਸ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਨਾਲ ਨਜਿੱਠਣ ਲਈ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਨੀਤੀ ਦਾਅਵਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੰਗਲ ਅਤੇ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਵਰ 5.92% ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਜੰਗਲਾਤ, ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਜੰਗਲਾਤ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਦੁਆਰਾ 2030 ਤੱਕ ਇਸਨੂੰ 7.5% ਤੱਕ ਵਧਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਨਿਰਾਸ਼ਾਜਨਕ ਟੀਚਾ ਨਿਰਧਾਰਤ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

“ਇੰਡੀਅਨ ਸਟੇਟ ਆਫ਼ ਫੋਰੈਸਟ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ 2021 ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਰਾਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸਲ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਵਰ ਸਿਰਫ 3.67% ਹੈ। ਇਸਨੂੰ 7% ਤੱਕ ਵਧਾ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਕੁਝ ਹਾਸਿਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਣਾ, ਸਗੋਂ ਇਸਦੀ ਲੋੜ 7% ਨਹੀਂ 33% ਹੈ।

ਇਸੇ ਲਈ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨੂੰ ਰੁੱਝ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਐਕਟ’ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸਮਿਤਾ ਕੌਰ ਜੋ ਵੱਟਰੁੱਖ ਸੰਸਥਾ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਥਾਪਕ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਮਨਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੋ ਵਾਟਰ ਵਾਰੀਅਰਜ਼ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਬੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਰੁੱਖ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਐਕਟ ਲਾਗੂ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਅਪੀਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।

ਜੇਕਰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਅੰਦਰ ਜ਼ਮੀਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਹਰਿਆਲੀ ਹੀ ਨਾ ਰਹੀ ਤਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹੇਗਾ। ਕਮਰਸ਼ੀਅਲ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਲਈ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਆਬੋ-ਹਵਾ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੋਚਣ ‘ਤੇ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਹਰਿਆਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਬਰਕਰਾਰ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ ਕੁੱਝ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ!

CCTV footage of self-styled Christian prophet Baljinder Singh’s office has gone viral, showing him beating his employees, including women. The footage is reportedly from February 2025. Notably, just a few days earlier, the Kapurthala Police had registered an FIR against him under IPC sections 354-A, 354-D, and 506 for sexual harassment, stalking, and criminal intimidation, based on a complaint filed by a 22-year-old woman.
