Human rights in Bangladesh have taken a turn for worse as the country heads towards a general election next year.

BANGLADESH 🇧🇩: Amnesty International is deeply concerned to learn from media reports that the Cabinet yesterday approved the final draft of the Cyber Security Act (CSA) without making any substantial changes to the draft that was published earlier this month for comment.

The call for feedback on the draft CSA was a mere tick box exercise if substantial inputs by civil society were not taken into consideration.

The Cabinet must not push through the CSA as it is largely a replication of the draconian Digital Security Act (DSA) that preceded it and retains repressive features which have been used to threaten and restrict the rights to freedom of expression, privacy and liberty in Bangladesh.

Amnesty International urges the Bangladeshi authorities to substantially amend the draft CSA before taking it any further and align it with international human rights law and standards.

Bangladesh: Today, on the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, we call upon the government of Bangladesh to urgently end and criminalise the practice of enforced disappearances and ensure truth, justice and reparations for the victims and their families.

Enforced disappearances violate numerous human rights, including the rights to life, freedom from torture, liberty, and a fair trial.

Bangladesh should ratify the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance and accept the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances' request to conduct an official visit to Bangladesh.
