Five years ago today at Abbey Gate. Never forgotten.
For five years, the records of Gunnery Sergeant Jonathan Eby, Lance Corporal Jordan Houston and Corporal Michael Gretzon did not accurately reflect their heroism during the Abbey Gate terrorist attack.
These men put their lives on the line to save others. Today, we made it right.
As our Nation marks five years since the attack at Abbey Gate, we honor the memory of the thirteen service members who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Their memory will forever live in the heart of a grateful nation.
Five years ago today, on August 26, 2021, Marine Corporal Daegan William-Tyeler Page was killed when a suicide bomber attacked the Abbey Gate at Hamid Karzai Intl Airport in Kabul, killing 13 American service members. He was 23 years old.
A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Page was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment out of Camp Pendleton. He had been in Kabul only about two weeks after being sent as part of a quick-reaction force (QRF) when the evacuation began to unravel.
Across his chest he carried the tattoo “Death Before Dishonor,” and those who served beside him say he embodied it fully, the Marine who still managed a smile in the darkest moments, the one everyone in the company knew by name. He shared a love of hunting and the outdoors with his father, adored dogs, and grew up playing youth hockey and running with the Boy Scouts. A good Marine and an even better friend, one of his fellow Marines put it, and that judgment is shared by virtually everyone who knew him.
Page and the twelve others who fell that day, 11 Marines, one Navy corpsman, and one Army soldier, were posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. In 2024, Congress presented the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation’s highest civilian honor, to all thirteen families. When the Nebraska State Patrol thanked the crowds who first lined the roads for his 2021 homecoming, their message was simple: rest in peace, hero.
Five years later, this community is still answering that call, flags raised once more, determined that his name will not fade.
Never forgotten.
🚨 JUST IN: In a truly incredible moment, SecWar Pete Hegseth just PERSONALLY gave upgraded valor awards to US Marines who were DOWNGRADED by the Biden admin after they ran into danger in the 2021 Abbey Gate bombings
Biden tried HIDING his failure by throwing THEM under the bus.
Hegseth just gave them what they’re OWED 🇺🇸
God bless these patriots who ran TOWARD danger 🙏🏻
Sean O’Malley revealed what he told Donald Trump following his knockout victory at the White House: “I said, ‘Happy birthday. I knocked out a Canadian for you.’”
So Justin Gaethje was just mindlessly staring at the Declaration of Independence during his walkout 🤣
“Their language was different. I’m not smart enough to read that.” 💀
