What most people remember from Alex Salmond’s final social media post is the slogan
“Scotland, country not county.”
It is a powerful line, and it is no surprise that it has been embraced as his closing statement on independence.

What is largely forgotten is what he said alongside it:
“Part of becoming independent is about thinking independently, not subserviently.”
That, to me, is the single most important step on Scotland’s path to independence and it is the one we are failing to take. Nowhere is this failure more evident than in our political class.

We see no independent thinking from any party, only subservient rhetoric. They can all recite policies for the narrow areas the devolved administration is permitted to manage, yet none can answer the most basic questions of independence.
What will replace the DWP? Where will the Scottish civil service be headquartered? How many MSPs will an independent Parliament have, and where will it sit? These are not details; they are fundamentals.

The silence is telling. Independence has not been planned for because our politicians are still thinking within a system imposed on Scotland by the English state, rather than beyond it.

Yes, we need a free and democratic mandate of 50% plus one, and the clearest route is an election Westminster cannot block. But beyond securing that mandate, we do not need more Holyrood policy promises. We need clarity on the foundations of statehood: how taxes will be collected once HMRC is gone, what rates will apply, how quickly a Scottish central bank can issue a national currency, and how education will be governed in an independentScotland.

It is clear to me now that Independence will never be delivered by careerist British politicians angling for seats at the English table. It will be built by Scottish patriots prepared to do the hard work of designing the architecture of a new Scotland thinking independently, not subserviently.
