16 years ago, a member of the Afghan Police helped a member of the Taliban enter our base disguised as a "detainee," then released him from his cell with access to an RPG & small arms, with the intent of letting him shoot down an Osprey. He aimed in on a low-hovering Osprey only 100 meters away: an easy kill on the Osprey and its passengers, Navy SEAL Vice Admiral Robert Hardward & his staff. They would all easily have been killed if not for a quick thinking Ken McGonigle who saw him aiming and opened fire on him, causing him to retreat and abandon his attempt.
His retreat was into our own jail, forcing us to attack a fortified structure on our own base. Ken McGonigle, Pfc Gammone and Lance Corporal Cornelius all charged into the fight and were lost that day.
I will never forget them and hope you can keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers.
