The stolen prince. Prince (Dejatch) Alemayehu Tewodros of Ethiopia) (1861-1879), Son of King (Emperor) Tewdros II and Empress Tiruwork Wube of Abyssinia Ethiopia. His father committed suicide rather than surrender after his defeat by the British, led by Sir Robert Napier, at the Battle of Magdala in 1868, in which the British forces came to rescue the protestant missionaries he was holding hostage.
Alamayehu was orphaned when his mother died during the trip to the coast, the British forces had intended to take them both to Britain but Alamayou travelled alone. He was introduced to Queen Victoria at her Isle of Wight residence, Osbourne House. He was educated at Rugby and Sandhurst where he was deeply unhappy possibly due to the racism that he encountered. He moved to Far Headingley, Leeds, to stay with his old tutor Cyril Ransome but contracted pleurisy and died of the illness 6 weeks later.
He died at the age of 18 on 14th November 1879, after an unhappy childhood, and was buried at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle at the request of Queen Victoria. You can see some of the looted Ethiopian treasures in the picture including crowns, bibles, books, cross etc. Ethiopia should bring back the prince’s remains and the royal treasures stolen by british forces.
