Throwing stones and bottles at leaders' vehicles during an election campaign amounts to the murder of democracy. This does not appear to be the act of an ordinary crowd; it looks like deliberate violence.
If the police had been informed in advance and the convoy was still attacked, then both the Assam Police and the Election Commission are accountable. Remaining silent would be seen as an act of partisanship.
Whether it is the Nagaon by-election or any other, strict action must be taken if workers from any party engage in stone-pelting. If leaders are not safe, how can the ordinary voter be safe?
This is not "politics"; it is thuggery. There must be an immediate FIR, an investigation of CCTV footage, and the arrest of the culprits. Otherwise, even greater violence will occur next time.

Just now while heading to an election rally in Nagaon, Assam BJP workers attacked the car in which former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and myself were travelling with stones and bottles. Police were requested much in advance to control the crowd but the situation was allowed to escalate. The Election Commission of India should continue to remain a mute spectator to such acts of violence in BJP ruled states.
