📍 When Kerala floods, it doesn't just spread — it goes deep.
We modeled the 1% annual-chance (100-year) flood across the entire state of Kerala, and the results highlight a very different flood risk profile than much of India.
Key findings:
🏠 2.18 million buildings (16.7% of all buildings) are exposed to flooding
🌊 511,000+ buildings would experience more than 2 meters of flood depth
🚧 19% of roads and 31% of railway tracks lie within the floodplain
📊 Average flood depth in Kerala is 1.52 m — significantly deeper than what we observed in neighboring Tamil Nadu.
Some of the most exposed districts include:
• Alappuzha – 26% of buildings exposed
• Kozhikode – 23% exposed
• Malappuram – more than 287,000 exposed buildings, the highest in the state
Why is Kerala different?
Its 44 rivers descend rapidly from the Western Ghats to the Arabian Sea. Short, steep watersheds combined with intense monsoon rainfall can create fast-rising and deep floodwaters. Reservoir operations can also play a critical role during extreme events.
The devastating 2018 floods showed what's at stake: 483 lives lost, over a million people displaced, and billions in damages.

1 in 6 buildings in Tamil Nadu sits within a 100-year floodplain. We mapped them all — and made the data free and open.
Flooding isn't a future problem for Tamil Nadu.
The 2015 Chennai floods claimed more than 400 lives and caused an estimated $3 billion in damages. In 2023, Cyclone Michaung brought over 530 mm of rainfall in just three days, disrupting critical infrastructure and impacting millions.
Using our Flood Atlas, we modeled the 1% annual-chance (100-year) floodplain across the entire state.
What we found:
🔹 4.06 million buildings (16.1% of all buildings) are exposed to flooding
🔹 Nearly 432,000 buildings could experience more than 2 meters of flood depth
🔹 20% of roads and 30% of railway infrastructure lie within the floodplain
The risk is highly concentrated:
📍 Mayiladuthurai – 47% of buildings exposed
📍 Nagapattinam – 41%
📍 Thiruvarur – 37%
That's important because flood resilience isn't about protecting everywhere at once. When risk is concentrated, targeted investments can protect the largest number of people and assets.
The path forward is not a single project. It's a long-term commitment to restoring wetlands and eris, improving drainage systems, strengthening land-use planning, and designing infrastructure for tomorrow's climate—not yesterday's.
