This is probably a great explanation. GDP per capita alone will not be enough. The services the government provides matter: public safety, clean roads, better trash collection, 24/7 electricity, water, sanitation, better stormwater, and better air to breathe. For me, that is more important than GDP per capita alone.

GDP shows the size of the cake, the total economic production of a country.

GDP per capita shows the average slice each person receives.

HDI shows how good that cake is and how widely its benefits are distributed across society in terms of health, education, and real quality of life.
