Churches across Chin State in Myanmar have been affected by the ongoing violence since the coup in February 2021. Reports of airstrikes, artillery attacks, raids and arson have been accompanied by footage showing extensive damage to places of worship.
Myanmar Witness analysed 10 claims of damage to churches in Chin between March and August 2023. These examples indicate how the conflict is having a devastating impact on the cultural and religious landscape in Chin State.

💥 Entire village destroyed

The entire village of Si Hkam Gyi was reportedly destroyed in a three-day-long fight in Mansi township, Kachin state.
Myanmar Witness geolocated footage of the destroyed religious site.
The Myanmar Military reportedly bombed Si Hkam Gyi village on 18 February, destroying various infrastructure, including a school and religious buildings.
On 19 February, the joint forces (KIA, AA, KPDF)* reportedly captured the Myanmar military base camp in the village.
According to local media, five people died, and over 30 people were injured. There were also claims of underage soldiers present in the list of casualties.

💥 Alleged airstrike

Mant Maw village, Muse township, was allegedly targeted by airstrikes on 28 November 2023.
According to reports in local media, a woman was killed and her husband was injured, with multiple houses destroyed.
Myanmar Witness geolocated footage of the damaged buildings.
Investigators also noted the extensive damage to the roofing and the lack of visible ash/burn marks on destroyed buildings.
