45 seconds, one field, one year at McKenzie Farms:
In spring, open the ground & precision-level; add 5 inches of water; grow through spring–summer; harvest in fall; welcome winter habitat for the Pacific Flyway. 🌾🦆
🌿 Wetlands help but take ~150 years to accumulate soil—plus they don’t produce crops.
🌾 Rice isn’t always flooded, but it offers a balance—slowing subsidence while keeping agriculture viable.
Aus rice growers might have been surprised to see an extra image in their dashboards on 22 March. The @esa has kept the older Sentinel-2A satellite in orbit for another year, so all crops are now getting at least 2 images every 5 days! @RiceExtension@ricegrowers@AgriFuturesAU
BOOOOM, Marcelina has just pushed another 527 kms northwest, currently on the Newcastle Creek between Daly Waters and Tennant Creek! She is now over 2100 kms from her spring home in Balranald. This is incredible to witness.
"Given the species' national significance, the program will now manage the small wetlands specifically for the Australian painted snipe in partnership with the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder."
It’s Gloria & Marcelina farm!

Marcelina has homed in on the Goyder Lagoon at Clifton Hills Station, beside the Birdsville track in SA. It’s recognised as an Important Bird Area, home to Grey Grasswren, Yellow Chat and loads of waterbirds, including previous records of APS.
👀Look at these magnificent recently fledged baby bitterns we just found this weekend near Griffith, already ~200 metres from their nest. Easily spotted with our drone, the old nest would have been a hive of secret activity over the past two months. #bitternsinrice
👀Marcelina’s incredible northward journey continues! 👀
She’s just arrived on the Warburton Creek in the far north-east of SA, 950 km from where we caught her on Jan. 3rd near Balranald. Documenting long distance APS movements for the first time is all thanks to crowdfunding! 🙏
BREAKING NEWS:
Marcelina is on the move!
And it might just be the start of a northward journey to her wintering site. She is currently near Pitarpunga Lake, about 20 km from where we think she’s been for at least three months with Gloria & co. Hold on to your seats …
Yesterday, I got our orchid on ABC national TV news after its best spring in ten years. But seriously, some great exposure for the endangered Australian Painted-snipe, a bird that appears to be in deep trouble. @TrackingAPSnipe@BirdlifeOz @nswenviromedia https://t.co/EotetxWuMw
Despite a tough start to the season for rice growers (too much water, delaying preparation and sowing), we still have over 500 ha signed up for this season’s #bitternfriendlyrice. That makes over 3500 ha for the total @LLSRiverina @AusLandcare incentive program. Brilliant.
Australian Painted-snipe spam all day, probably all week, possibly all month. #sorrynotsorry
This gorgeous little battler deserves the spotlight. Fact: females lay the eggs, then take off, with the male raising the young. Opposite of bitterns! https://t.co/6vgsQhVWf7 📷P.Merritt
