Rookie police officer Jess Turnbull 19 killed after being struck by car while attending crash scene in Northumberland

Nineteen year old rookie Northumbria police officer Jess Turnbull was hit by a black Mercedes while dealing with a two vehicle crash on the a189 spine road near Cramlington on Monday night 8 June.

The land rover freelander and ford explorer involved in the initial crash saw the land rover occupants flee on foot across fields while the unrelated Mercedes struck her marked patrol car and her at 11.10pm.

She was taken to hospital but died on Wednesday 10 June surrounded by loved ones making her the first Northumbria officer killed in the line of duty for twenty years.

The seventy three year old Mercedes driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Northumbria police chief constable vanessa jardine described jess as dedicated and committed and said the force flag is flying at half mast at headquarters as tributes are paid to the young officer.

Police have appealed for witnesses or people with dashcam footage to come forward.
