A road accident between Otavi and Tsumeb claimed the life of Rodney Uakondjerua Mborero (37) on Friday evening and left five people injured.

Oshikoto Police Regional Commander Commissioner Ndafudha Iifo confirmed the incident on Saturday.

The crash reportedly occurred on the B1, 20 kilometres from Tsumeb towards Otavi. A sedan travelling from Otavi towards Tsumeb allegedly swerved to avoid a warthog in its lane.

The 33-year-old driver then lost control and collided head-on with an oncoming sedan travelling from Tsumeb towards Otavi. The other vehicle, driven by a 53-year-old man, had five occupants, Iifo said.

One passenger died on the spot and the others sustained injuries. All injured passengers were transported to Tsumeb State Hospital for medical attention.

Minister of Urban and Rural Development James Sankwasa met with the Otjiwarongo Municipal Council this morning to address concerns over the management of the local authority, including the alleged mismanagement and misallocation of land, as well as the unlawful suspension of staff members for prolonged periods.

During the meeting, Sankwasa stressed the importance of sound financial governance, warning that no local authority will receive a budget allocation unless it can prove that its financial statements have been audited and are up to date.

He further reminded council members that any expenditure incurred without an approved budget is unauthorised.

The minister also expressed concern that the municipality has not yet submitted the requested list of pensioners and persons with disabilities who have outstanding municipal accounts.

Sankwasa said he had previously requested the information, but it had not yet been provided.

Discussions between the minister and the council continued behind closed doors.
