BRUTALITY OF A LEGAL PRACTITIONER IN JALINGO, TARABA STATE

The inhumane treatment meted out to Augustine Raphael, Esq., a legal practitioner based in Jalingo, Taraba State, by officers of the ATC Police Outpost, is a shameful affront to the sanctity of the legal profession, the rule of law, and the dignity of humanity itself.

It is utterly outrageous, barbaric, and intolerable that a lawyer, in the lawful discharge of his professional duty, could be slapped, caned with a sugarcane, and unlawfully detained by those constitutionally empowered to uphold the law. This incident not only assaults Mr. Raphael's person but also represents an attack on the legal profession and the administration of justice in Nigeria.

I therefore condemn in the strongest possible terms this unprofessional, unconstitutional, and criminal act by officers of the Nigerian Police Force in Jalingo. Such conduct is a disgrace to the uniform and a clear breach of Section 34, 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.

I call on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Jalingo Branch, the Afam Osigwe, SAN led NBA National Leadership, the NBA Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL), to rise to the occasion and take immediate, decisive steps to ensure that this matter does not go unpunished.

The Inspector General of Police and the Taraba State Police Command must launch a full-scale investigation into this act of brutality, identify and discipline the offending officers, and issue a formal apology to Mr. Raphael and the legal community at large.

The Bar must send a strong message that an injury to one lawyer is an injury to all, and that no lawyer, anywhere in Nigeria, shall be assaulted, humiliated, or intimidated while carrying out his or her lawful duties. The NBA Must lead the charge to ensure that this shameful incident does not become another statistic in the long list of police impunity. #JusticeForRaphael
