Full disclosure for the grad students struggling out there.
I was in lab for 15h yesterday. And my experiments didn't work. I've done this assay over 1000 times. And it didn't work. It happens sometimes.
Looking at my lab notes today to work out what went wrong.
Hang in there.
@careerconversa1 The increasingly greater administrative and bureaucratic burden. The pointless differences in writing/editing style between different journals/grants/ethical proposals. So time-consuming and distract from the real science!
The file names of our project proposal for ethical evaluation are exactly the same, except we add our initials everytime someone makes a new version 🙈
Now I have at least 10 versions of what is essentially the same document, but with a longer name 😭
@addyesusnick @AcademicChatter I feel this soo much! I'm also 23 and the pressure to know what the hell I want to do with my life is immense. I also feel some disconnect with my peers sometimes, since everyone is older and have different priorities in their life!
Did you hear? #BlackInNeuroWeek is real and it’s coming to a TL near you! Three things you should do:
1. Follow @BlackInNeuro
2. Wait till July 27 for the good stuff
3. Always support your Black colleagues, on & off twitter
Now RT and let’s get this number up. Can we do 5k?
These are some of the professional policies for anti-racist science communication I’ve used over the years and will be even more adamant about in my future #scicomm work.
Ever wanted to combine being a neuroscientist w/ a DJ career? Well @guido_meijer went a step further to create the BrainBeat toolbox as part of the 2016 @artneuro competition to allow all of you (with access to cellular resolution imaging data) to create groovy brain beats.
"Oh you got NSERC! That's great man! I guess they must be easier for black people to get?"
Having someone casually say this to me after getting a PhD NSERC was crushing
"Come on you know I'm just joking" was the inevitable response when I called them on it

After my lecture about the racist exploitation of Henrietta Lacks, a white man claiming to be a retired doctor from Johns Hopkins proclaimed I was wrong because “patients in the colored ward got BETTER care because we tested experimental treatments on them.” 😳#BlackintheIvory
Million dollar question:
*So what are we going to do about it?*
Million dollar answer (for today) @salkinstitute is hiring fellows positions (aka skip-your-postdoc-straight-to-faculty job).
I want a more diverse applicant pool...
PLEASE HELP ME change the culture and RT.
