This is one of the coolest gifts I’ve received: a brain cactus! Thank you to Kayleigh Roux, my ex-intern for such a thoughtful and interesting gift! #neuropsychology#brain
To clear up some confusion, dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease are not different things. Alzheimer’s Disease is one TYPE of dementia. Others include Parkinson’s Disease, fronto-temporal dementia and vascular dementia. Hope that clarifies things.
The brain needs a constant flow of oxygen to stay healthy.⏳🧠 When that flow is disrupted—even briefly—cells can be damaged, sometimes permanently. It’s a quiet, urgent crisis that can change lives in an instant. https://t.co/3EQLBdItJe #BrainHealth#Neuropsychology@try_headway
In South Africa, road traffic fatalities are twice the global rate for children aged 0–4 and boys aged 5–14. 🚗⚡ Traumatic brain injury is a silent epidemic — neuropsychological assessments are vital to understand how young brains are affected and what can be done to help. 🧠
Eating before a neuropsychological assessment is important! 🍎 A balanced meal helps fuel your brain, improving concentration and cognitive performance. Going in on an empty stomach can make it harder to focus and think clearly. 🧠💡 #BrainPower#Neuropsychology#Focus
Smell is the brain’s secret emotion trigger! 😲 A whiff can make you feel happy, nostalgic, or cranky because your nose talks directly to the brain’s emotion center. Your nose knows your mood before you do! 🧠👃 #BrainScience https://t.co/3EQLBdItJe
Prospective memory is remembering to remember, like attending an appointment or making a call. Forgetting? That’s your brain’s doing. A neuropsychological assessment can tell if it’s a slip or something more serious. 🧠💭 https://t.co/3EQLBdJ1yM @AlzheimersSA@DementiaSAorg
Loss of smell can be an early warning sign of Alzheimer's disease. The brain’s olfactory system, which controls smell, is often affected as the disease progresses. Noticing changes in your sense of smell may help in early detection and treatment. 🧠 #BrainHealth@AlzheimersSA
A mother’s diet during pregnancy impacts her baby’s brain health. Nutrients like omega-3s and folic acid are key, while avoiding excess sugar, processed foods, and alcohol can help protect brain development. What you eat really matters for your baby’s future! 🧠💚 #BrainHealth
Schizophrenia can cause hallucinations, delusions, and trouble with thinking or daily tasks. A neuropsychological evaluation helps understand brain function, guiding better support and treatment. Compassion is key. 💙 #Neuropsychology#MentalHealth https://t.co/5taAlhDpbH
People with traumatic brain injury may struggle with behaviours like irritability, impulsivity, memory problems or difficulty focusing. A neuropsychological evaluation can help identify these challenges and guide personalised support. 💙 #TBI#Neuropsychology@HeadwayGauteng
Autism can look different for everyone, but common signs include challenges with social interactions, communication, and repetitive behaviours. Neuropsychologists play a key role in understanding how the brain works in autism, helping create tailored support for each person. 💙
Ever heard of Munchausen syndrome? 🤔 It’s when someone pretends to be sick or harms themselves to get attention. Neuropsychologists can help with diagnosing and understanding this complex mental health issue. #BrainHealth#Neuropschology https://t.co/3EQLBdJ1yM
The frontal lobes are like the brain's "CEO" – they help us plan, make decisions, and control our impulses. So when they’re still developing (like during adolescence), you get… well, a lot of “hold my drink, watch this!” moments. 🤦♂️🧠 #BrainScience https://t.co/3EQLBdItJe
Did you know an MRI can see dementia in action? 🧠 As the brain shrinks, gaps between brain areas get bigger, and certain parts become smaller. It’s like a map showing how dementia is changing the brain over time. https://t.co/3EQLBdItJe #DementiaAwareness#BrainHealth#MRI
