Consideration.
If you really love someone, you consider them. You think before you speak, and you move with an awareness of how your actions affect their peace. You care about what makes them feel safe, not just what makes you feel good. If you truly love them, you think about how your actions will affect them.
When we first were married I had the bad habit of leaving my clothes drawers just slightly open. After several months my neat husband very gently asked me if I would mind closing them all the way. I at first bristled with pride, thinking to myself, โItโs not that big of a deal.โ And immediately on the heels of that I was struck with this conviction, โExactly. Itโs a *very* small thing to ask. So out of love for your husband just close the drawer.โ
It was a paradigm shift that Iโve not practiced perfectly, but Iโve never forgotten.
But now itโs a pet peeve of mine when drawers are left open. ๐
