In simpler terms, the industry finally found someone willing to say publicly what they’ve been lobbying for privately all along..

Trains carrying hazardous materials run right through #OnlyInDistrictOne. The track inspection provisions I secured in BUILD America 250 will help prevent derailments in our communities and keep us safe. @TransportDems@BMWEDIBT
As Ranking Member of the @TransportDems Rail Subcommittee, I have been fighting for strong rail safety provisions in today's surface transportation bill. That includes @RepDeluzio's Railway Safety Act, which he, @RepTroyNehls, and I have introduced as a bipartisan amendment.
I am introducing a bipartisan amendment with @RepTroyNehls and @RepDeluzio to include commonsense rail safety provisions in the surface transportation bill.
I urge all my colleagues on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to vote YES on this amendment to prevent derailments like the catastrophe in East Palestine.
East Palestine was 3 years ago.
3,100+ derailments later, the rail lobby is still fighting basic safety reform.
Bipartisan support exists. Trump’s DOT supports passage. VP Vance backed it in 2023.
@repdinatitus Nevada has a voice here.
Pass the Railway Safety Act. #RailSafety
At the @NVAFLCIO COPE Conference, @dinatitus came in already knowing the file. As Ranking Member on the @TransportDems rail subcommittee, she’s stood with @BLET & @BMWEDIBT on what actually matters.. two-person crews, real inspections, & safety policy that holds outside a hearing room. #Raillabor knows the difference between rhetoric & a record. She’s been on the right side of that line. #NV01
.@AaronDFordNV didn’t just vote right on #railLabor in the #nvleg.. as AG, he joined the fight in the 9th Circuit to defend Nevada’s ability to enforce two-person crew laws when the FRA tried to wipe out state protections. Rail labor stood that line with him & won. @JosephMLombardo vetoed #AB456, a #railsafety bill.. then cited “litigation risk” as cover. The carriers made that argument, & he used it. Ford went to court in that fight. Nevada’s railroaders know the difference between a veto & a court filing. One avoids the fight. One takes it. 💪 @BLET #NVGov
This isn't a joke: this is what happens when safety takes a backseat to profit.
A 13,000-ft freight train derailed near I-80 on Friday, & despite trying to pass legislation that includes shorter trains w/better safety measures, this important issue keeps being vetoed and ignored.
Given the derailment near Sparks today, it’s worth revisiting what’s actually been debated, vetoed, & left unresolved in Nevada. The gap between ‘safety is improving’ & how risk is managed in practice doesn’t close itself. The record is there.. #nvleg

⚠️Just before 7am this morning, #TMFR and Storey County Fire responded to a reported train derailment near USA Parkway and I-80. First-arriving units conducted a thorough size-up and coordinated with rail personnel to assess the situation.
#TrafficAlert Lane closure on I-80 eastbound mile marker 33 (one mile east of USA Parkway) due to a non-passenger train derailment. No hazardous material spills and no injuries. Expect delays in the area. #Reno#Sparks
It is always better in a union!
During the @Teamsters Rail Conference, I discussed the upcoming Surface Transportation Reauthorization bill with national rail leaders. I will be advocating for policies like my Secure Tracks Act which would help ensure that any track defects that put our safety at risk are identified and addressed right away.

Trains carrying hazardous materials run right through #OnlyinDistrictOne. As Ranking Member of the @TransportDems Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials, I am introducing the Secure Tracks Act to help ensure that any track defects that put our safety at risk are identified and addressed right away. This common-sense legislation will save lives and protect our property and the environment. It is a win-win-win.
From the locomotive cab to the Nevada communities we roll through, #RailSafety is lived, not theorized. We appreciate the bipartisan push to bring the Railway Safety Act back. Rail labor has been clear: stronger safeguards matter.
@SenCortezMasto@SenJackyRosen
When trains derail, fire fighters are expected to make split-second decisions – often without the real-time information about the hazards onboard.
The Railway Safety Act would change that.

This gang of lobbyists & free market cheerleaders wants Congress to bury real #railsafety where no one ever has to vote on it.. not because prices would rise, but because Wall Street demands the #PSR model stay untouched. Fighting basic safety standards to protect margins is why workers die, communities get destroyed, & corporations dodge responsibility. Rail isn’t an abstract economic theory.. It’s real people, real towns, real freight. If affordability means preserving short term profits by externalizing risk, then Congress should be ashamed, not obedient.
A widely circulated analysis by the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism has found that too little is being done to counter safety lapses related to fatigue in the railroad industry, leading to preventable accidents and death. Read more: https://t.co/ZZk2nnJoVs
.@SenJackyRosen & @SenCortezMasto - Railroaders work long, demanding hours, yet are excluded from the overtime tax relief in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act due to RLA coverage. Support Amendment #2613 to ensure #raillabor receives the same fair treatment as others. #NVSen
I’m not speaking for the folks doing the inspections, but I’ll say this.. when their work gets cut, mine becomes the next headline. The railroads aren’t pushing tech to make us safer. They’re pushing it to gut inspections, delay repairs, and get away with doing less for more. Call it innovation all you want, but replacing a trained eye with a machine isn’t safety. It’s a business model built on risk. Technology should back the people who keep this industry upright, not replace them with software and hope. If the carriers want credibility on safety, they can start by telling the truth. This isn’t progress. It’s a cost-cutting campaign hiding behind a screen. @Teamsters@BMWEDIBT
.@repdinatitus’s new role as Ranking Member of the @TransportDems Railroads, Pipelines & Hazmat Subcommittee is well-deserved. #raillabor & #railsafety have no better ally. Leadership rooted in principle & action is rare these days—this is a win for workers & progress alike.
