The 30th of March is commemorated by Palestinians worldwide as Land Day.

In 1975, Israel announced its plans to further expropriate thousands of acres of Arab-owned land. To facilitate this, curfews on Arab villages were announced to begin on March 29th the following year. On the 30th of March 1976, the Palestinian population in the region began their resistance to this with organized large-scale strike action, marches, and demonstrations. In their attempts to quash the resistance, 6 people were murdered by the Israeli Occupation Forces, as well as hundreds wounded and arrested.

Since 1976, the 30th of March (now known as Land Day) has become a day of tribute to all who have sacrificed themselves in the struggle. The date has been used to galvanize the resistance numerous times in the years since. On the 25th anniversary, which was also during the Second Intifada, tens of thousands of Palestinians mobilized, with many of the demonstrations being met with live ammunition from the IOF.

Most notably, in recent years, the Gaza Border protests, also known as the Great March of Return, began on March 30th, 2018, and continued weekly until December the next year. A weekly peaceful march to the Israeli border to call for the right of Palestinian refugees to be allowed to return home, as well as to protest the ongoing land, air, and sea blockade of the Gaza Strip. During these peaceful marches to the perimeter of Gaza, 223 Palestinians were murdered by the IOF; those killed included medical personnel and children.

Land Day has become synonymous with the Palestinian national identity and their ongoing struggle. The day has repeatedly forced onlookers to reckon with the colonial violence of the Israeli state. This year's Land Day marks nearly 6 months of brutal genocide inflicted by the Israeli state, and once again, onlookers will be forced to confront the violence a colonial-apartheid state such as Israel commits. However, it will never be enough to merely mark the day for solemn remembrance; we must take the lead from those in the Palestinian struggle and remember that today, as it always has been, should be a day of action.
