So yesterday was the day I officially retired from the NHS after 40 years. A colleague made this fantastic cake celebrating my love of writing and books. I'll continue as a writer and journo; you can follow my news on @RachaelRow. But what a career it has been.
So after years of transformation and development, the current state of affairs is devastating to see. Please don't normalise corridor care or overcrowded wards and departments. And look after the staff. The NHS cannot run without the staff, especially clinicians.
And the developments I have seen stand out too. I nursed some of the first people with AIDS in London and saw some of the first implantable defibs (I saw one in a museum recently). The best place to work was definitely accident and emergency. The camaraderie is incredible.
Career highlights are: being one of the first nurses to give thrombolysis in ED and changing pathways for people with heart attacks, setting up and running a long covid service, and working on a national project on emergency nursing.
If you are looking forward to 2023, and looking to improve your knowledge of #diabetes, this course is free and available to anyone. @SomersetPICKLS@NHSSomersetDig
