@theiaincameron Pretty sure Canada π¨π¦ has Sweden beat for #1 most islands in the world. The number of Canadian islands listed in the Wikipedia article is almost certainly off by an order of magnitude.
@duncancampbell@RichardMeyerDC Why full nameplate backup? Shouldn't N+2 (or+3 or +4) be sufficient?
If you have 100 MW load & 10 MW units of gas generation, 13-14 units should get you 8760 hours/year with a few 9's of reliability.
Full backup is only needed if unit size is similar to total load.
@AndreasenJack@nukeadvocate By amortizing it over an enormous quantity of MWh generated. Lifecycle emissions numbers that include cement are available, and nuclear (and hydro) blow any existing CCS project away by an order of magnitude at least.
@Sheidows@garyblack00@usma1982@MatthewDR Also, people buy and operate coffee shops. And when they do, they often buy 10-20 tables with only two seats. The 2-seat table-makers sell lots of tables to private smaller businesses.
@MegaWattXinfo@MLiebreich@CleaningUpPod Amazing to hear that someone is finally pursuing it seriously! The comment about E-W vs N-S interconnectors should be printed and framed. I hope you achieve it in 5 years, not 15. (And Canada needs to build overland E-W transmission too - no submarine cables needed!)
@sumpfgas@aviationarchive 40 lifts per day for fuel, food, and messages. Lifted fuel 5 gallons at a time, and even changed bulbs on running lights in the wingtips from the car! Bananas!
In a speech to the World Economic Forum, Mark Carney says middle powers such as Canada must accept that the rules-based international order is effectively dead, and great power rivalry with is here to stay. Key excerpt:
@PZeniewski There is still a credible case that LNG is already substantially better when the end use is power generation. This study calculates emissions per MJ (good for industrial heat). For electricity, LNG is likely to be used in CCGT which is >20% more efficient than even USC coal.
@PZeniewski This chart confuses the heck out of me. The note for the Y-axis scale says it uses GWP-20, but the yellow dots say that they represent the effect of calculating methane with a GWP-20. What is the difference between the blue bar and yellow dot if they're both GWP-20?
@bpolge@is_OwenLewis@Jordan_W_Taylor And in the case of Radon, that half life is only ~4 days. Kind of defies the "long duration" design basis of ion engines...
@TSLAFanMtl Those tents are extremely common for all sorts of trucks. Many ICE truck owners here in BC have them. A quick google will give you a dozen options. What is insane about it? Maybe that it doesn't take advantage of the Silverado mid-gate in any way?
@oskarelmgren@DJSnM At mach 1.0, the cone should be *very* flat. This is intuitively correct, if you imagine the shock as a superposition of circular ripples (pressure waves) from a moving object. At 1.0, it's like riding the edge of a large and expanding circle.
