True, but I think Beeching is too often scapegoated rather unfairly in this matter.
The then Minister of Transport in the Conservative government, Ernest Marples, was the driving force behind the railway cuts. At the same time, he was pushing a massive road-building scheme whilst he was also the MD of a road construction firm. The conflict of interest was a national disgrace.
Marples' political career ended ignominiously when he fled the country for Monaco to escape an investigation into his tax affairs.

People will think I'm crazy for this take, but I'm a big believer in the psychological impact of narratives on teams. Yes, Belgium looked so much better tonight and we looked lost. But this team had a boatload of good vibes behind them, and in the last 48 hours that vanished, and replacing it was a story of implicit political corruption that turned them into the bad guys, or at least the beneficiary of the corruption. You can't tell me that doesn't put pressure on the team, change the vibe, and take a psychological toll that impacted what happened on the field. American fans, serious and casual, should be pissed at this interference. We overturned a red card and our reward was losing what made this team so much fun until now.

The most abhorrent part in all of all of this is that Ofwat has just admitted that since 1994 when the sewage treatment regulations were introduced Welsh Water, like every other sewage company in the UK have been breaking the law.

That's 37 years of illegal activity, 37 years of incompetence, 37 years of failure, 37 years of the gross, violent, decimation of our rivers and beaches.

Where's the justice for them, where's the justice for bill players, where's the accountability, why aren't Ofwat's board now being prosecuted for misconduct in public office?

Yet another glaring example of how utterly failed the water industry is. All it took was one hot weekend and not one but two water companies have been brought to their knees, incapable of doing the most basic job possible, supplying their customers with water.

And we tolerate this nonsense.
