National Indigenous Peoples Day is a time to honour and celebrate the rich cultures and contributions of Indigenous Peoples throughout Turtle Island. It serves as a reminder to deepen our connections with Indigenous communities and the land we share as we work towards reconciliation in Canada.

Recognizing and uplifting Indigenous culture within colonial spaces is crucial. At Science North, we are proud of our Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff, who contribute to our growth in diversity and culture. Over the past year, we were privileged to host an Indigenous Programs Internship, and we are immensely grateful for the invaluable Indigenous knowledge they have brought to our organization.

We have established an internal Indigenous Initiatives Steering Committee to further our commitment. This committee will help us cultivate a culturally competent workforce, collaborate on Indigenous content across the organization, serve as a knowledge centre on Indigenous culture and perspectives, and support our ongoing efforts toward truth and reconciliation.

We deeply value our connections and relationships with Indigenous communities, locally and across Turtle Island. We extend our heartfelt thanks and Miigwetch to those who have contributed and supported us in our journey to decolonize Science North. Join us today at Science North as we come together to express our appreciation and honour Indigenous peoples.

May 21 is World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, and we want you to meet our committee members! 🌎🌈

Northwest & Northeast Indigenous Advisory Committees - Support expanded and deepened ongoing engagement with First Nations, including integrating Indigenous perspectives into science centres, schools and outreach experiences. Including members of regional elementary and secondary school boards, post-secondary program managers and researchers, small business owners, tourism owners and operators, artists, and educators, the Advisory Committees inform program content and activities, incorporating Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing into all aspects of Science North's operations. 🌿🌺

Indigenous Steering Committee - Helps build and foster a culturally competent workforce, develop and collaborate across the organization on Indigenous content, act as a knowledge centre on Indigenous culture and perspectives, and help support efforts to advance the work of truth and reconciliation. 🤝🔍

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA) Committee - Works toward the continuous improvement of Science North as an equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible space to work and play, through education and events, programming and exhibit communication, and policy changes. 🌟🌈

It's a special week for us at Science North! Dynamic Earth is celebrating its 20th anniversary on May 10. 🎂🥳

Almost 20 years ago, after receiving a facelift, the Big Nickel was travelling through Sudbury on a flatbed truck to be hoisted by two cranes into its new base at Dynamic Earth for the official opening ceremony. 🚚 ✂️🎀

To mark the occasion, we're offering 20 percent off general admission to Dynamic Earth, including underground tours, from May 8 through May 27! 🎟️ We're also excited to bring back birthday party packages for those who are looking for fun, affordable, and flexible party options in a unique venue 🎂🎉
