An old, but apt fable:

A scorpion wants to cross a river but cannot swim, so it asks a frog to carry it across. The frog hesitates, afraid that the scorpion might sting it, but the scorpion promises not to, pointing out that it would drown if it killed the frog in the middle of the river. The frog considers this argument sensible and agrees to transport the scorpion. Midway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog anyway, dooming them both. The dying frog asks the scorpion why it stung despite knowing the consequence, to which the scorpion replies: "I am sorry, but I couldn't help myself. It's my character." @Wikipedia

@jacksantucci -- I read your book on the early history of STV, and some of your interesting posts on strengthening parties to make PR work better. Question for you -- how do you grapple with the corruption of parties from that era that led to nonpartisan reform?

Any literature you might point me to? Is this a blind spot for the strong parties/pr crowd? I think most take the view that multipartyism and can solve that, but I am not so convinced.

@leedrutman @PR_STV Although all measures of say partisan fairness have their pros and cons, allowing complete intentional partisan gerrymandering as SCOTUS has done is undoubtedly worse than having some measure even if it allows abuse on the edges or some might say there's a better method.

@leedrutman @PR_STV As with most things in life, we often can't agree on the perfect, but we generally have consensus on what's better/what's worse and it is unquestionably the case that we are in a far worse spot vis-a-vis democracy and gerrymandering wars than if a CA style CRC was in each state.
