The UK government is fast tracking a deal to handover sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. This would cede control of the land on which the strategically valuable Diego Garcia base lies. A base critical in the recent attacks on Iran’s nuclear weapons enterprise, and which stands in the way of great Chinese naval presence across the Indian Ocean.

Loosing full access or having operations there constrained by a future Mauritius government is an unnecessary risk. Potential encroachment and unchecked Chinese maritime or land development on and around neighbor atolls in Chagos a longstanding concern - and valid seeing what has transpired in the South China Sea island building.

It’s time the U.S. leadership weigh in and ask the UK to pump the breaks or find a better solution.
