#TalkAboutRoadDeath : political choices at the top of government

The @transportgovuk, the current and previous Secretaries of State, @Heidi_Labour @LouHaigh and @LilianGreenwood, the Minister tasked with leading the reduction of injury trauma from road traffic collisions (RTC), have shown a consistent commitment to road safety. I do not see that waning, though the shifting timeline has had obviously devastating consequences.

The upcoming strategy is promised to be "evidence based”, attentive to victims’ voices which the Minister says she “carries” with her, and will introduce a "gear change in road safety" policy (possible strategy title?). Rather than speculate on briefings or leaks on ‘what’ might be included or not, we should wait to evaluate the strategy before declaring delight or disappointment, or somewhere between. For now, I want to focus on timing and priorities: the ‘when’ question.

The timeline for publishing the strategy has shifted since Labour @labourpress @UKLabour took office. In 2024, it was described as a "top priority," but nothing appeared that year. In 2025, it was promised "this year" and then "in the autumn", and there was still no strategy. Perhaps the delay is simply due to government bureaucracy, but perhaps not. Even if ‘autumn’ was meant, both possible deadlines passed: meteorological autumn ended on 30 November and astronomical autumn on 21 December.

At the end of 2025, the government prioritised an animal welfare strategy, and a men’s health strategy, although, shockingly, the latter did not address male injury trauma from RTCs @wesstreeting @DHSCgovuk While these are important areas, these policy choices invite questions as to the relative priorities of the Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer

Within the government’s sausage machine of policy development, it appears that initiatives aimed at saving the lives of foxes received precedence over measures intended to save thousands of human lives. I am aware this might prompt cries of "that's not fair!", but if unfair, what does this say about the delays? I put forward two possibilities: the Prime Minister is essentially silent on road safety and has put many other policy areas ahead of road safety. Or maybe it is as simple as it got gummed up in the bureaucracy? Either way, the result is the same: 2025 started and ended with no strategy.

Road safety was declared as a "top priority" in 2024 to urgently address the 81 daily deaths or serious injuries resulting from RTCs on Britain's roads, and as we start 2026, it remains on the government's pending list. In contrast, other policy areas have advanced, raising legitimate questions about why road safety is still in the queue.

Sadly, I predicted that the strategy would not be released during 2025 despite repeated commitments, and as 2026 gets going, it is pressing we know when it will see the light of day.

It is too important: each day 81 people are killed or seriously injured.
