The Situation of Hazara Refugees in Indonesia:

Hazara refugees in Indonesia face serious and widespread problems that have made their lives extremely difficult. These refugees have fled to Indonesia mainly due to war, violence, and discrimination in Afghanistan. Many have been in Indonesia for over ten years, waiting for resettlement. This prolonged wait has led to feelings of despair and hopelessness. They are deprived of basic human rights such as the right to work, education, and freedom of movement. The limited financial aid they receive is insufficient to meet their basic needs.
Their living conditions are severely inadequate. They live in small, shared spaces with inadequate health and welfare facilities. The lack of work and economic resources has caused tension within families, leading to a significant increase in domestic violence. Women and children are the most affected, facing serious psychological issues. Children suffer from severe depression due to the lack of access to education and recreational activities.
Moreover, delays in the resettlement process due to international political decisions have worsened their situation. International organizations like UNHCR act slowly, and refugees are not given clear information or timelines. Some refugees have resorted to suicide due to mental and emotional stress.

Hazara refugees in Indonesia have repeatedly held peaceful demonstrations due to their harsh living conditions and uncertainty. However, these protests are often broken up by the police, sometimes violently, even when they are entirely peaceful. These actions by the police increase tension and despair among the refugees, further deteriorating their mental and emotional health. Such behavior by security forces exacerbates the refugees' problems and highlights the urgent need for international attention and support.

What Should Be Done?

Immediate and effective actions are needed to improve the situation of these refugees. Accelerating the resettlement process and providing clear information and timelines are essential. Increasing financial aid to meet basic needs and offering counseling and psychological support services are also necessary. Improving living conditions by providing suitable accommodations and increasing access to education and cultural and social activities can help improve the refugees' morale and situation.

Why Has the Situation Reached This Point?

Hazara refugees have fled to Indonesia due to unsafe and violent conditions in Afghanistan, including war and ethnic and religious discrimination. Hazaras, as a targeted group in Afghanistan, have faced violence, massacres, and discrimination for years. The crisis in Afghanistan and the lack of adequate international support have forced them to flee the country.
Indonesia is considered a temporary host country for refugees because it does not have policies to accept refugees as citizens and primarily serves as a transitional station. Many refugees hope to be transferred to third countries through international organizations like UNHCR, but the resettlement process is slow due to political and bureaucratic obstacles. These long delays, combined with harsh living conditions in Indonesia, have worsened the refugees' situation, leading many to despair and severe psychological stress.

These problems highlight the urgent need for international attention and effective measures to improve the living conditions of Hazara refugees in Indonesia. Without swift and effective action, the situation of these refugees will remain critical, and their psychological and social problems will worsen.
