She was 16. It was raining. She was stranded. She made the only decision that seemed safe in that moment and two adult men chose to violate her for it.

Travelling alone is not consent. Being stranded is not consent. Making a mistake about which stop to get off at is not consent. Having a fight at home before leaving is not consent. None of these things are consent. Nothing is consent except consent.

The question being asked should not be why she boarded that bus. It should be why two grown men decided that a stranded teenager was an opportunity.

We keep auditing the girl’s choices and giving the rapists a pass.

A tofu company just recalled 75,000 packages across 29 states because the ink printed on the outside of the bag dissolved through the plastic and into the food. The suspected solvent is the product's own chili oil.

Ink migration is a known failure mode in flexible packaging. Most printing inks are lipophilic, meaning they dissolve in fat. Water-packed tofu can sit in printed film for years with no issue. Wrap chili crisp oil in that same film, let it sit refrigerated for months, and you've built a slow extraction experiment. Hodo says as much in the recall notice, where it's evaluating whether chili oil and heat drove the migration.

The part that should bother you more than the tofu is the regulatory setup. The FDA has no specific regulation for printing inks on food packaging. Inks get cleared indirectly, on the assumption that a "functional barrier" keeps them out of the food. When the barrier is a thin printed film and the food is oily, that assumption is doing a lot of work.

Nestlé learned this in 2005, when a UV ink chemical called ITX migrated through cartons into baby formula. They recalled 30 million liters of milk across Europe. That scandal is why Switzerland now maintains a list of permitted packaging inks the global food industry treats as the de facto standard. The US never wrote one.

Hodo caught this because the tofu visibly changed color.

Researchers have identified more than 200 ink-related chemicals capable of migrating into food. Almost none of them change the color.
