On this day in 1973, Syrian officer Naim Matanius Mourani, from Masyaf, raised the flag of the Syrian Arab Republic on the summit of Mount Hermon during the October War.

Arab armies fought together, led by the Syrian Arab Army in the north and the Egyptian Army in the south.

In the battle for Mount Hermon, 30 Israeli soldiers were killed and 31 others captured.

Brigadier General Matanius Mourani was later martyred in a terrorist bombing in Kafr Sousa, Damascus, on December 23, 2011.

There was a time when Syrian soldiers climbed Mount Hermon to raise the Syrian flag over occupied Syrian land.
