On the night of 1st June 1981, the splendid Jaffna public library, housing 97,000 rare books and manuscripts, was burned to the ground. The shock experienced by the men, women and children of Jaffna that morning is indescribable. That day all Tamils lost a piece of themselves.
The war in #Sudan has created a vast humanitarian need and it is not being met. Half the population of Sudan – 25 million people – need some form of relief.
Today in Scarborough, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Tamil-Canadians to hear their memories of Black July, honour those who lost their lives, and thank them for the many important contributions they have made – and continue to make – to Canada.

The perseverance of refugees in the face of adversity inspires me every day.
They need & deserve support & solidarity — not closed borders & pushbacks.
This #WorldRefugeeDay, I call on the world to match their courage with opportunity.
Including refugees in our schools, workplaces, health systems and communities opens the door to opportunities – and gives them hope away from home.

The building of a vihara at Kurunthoormalai in Mullaitivu by the military and Archaeology Department violated successive court orders prohibiting construction.
Now, President @RW_UNP has acknowledged and legitimised the vihara.
The govt and military are above the law in SL.
Wartime commander & current opposition lawmaker Sarath Fonseka vehemently opposes withdrawing military from #SriLanka's north and east.
“We see a tendency to weaken, to withdraw the army out of sheer greed for votes in the north and east. We view it as a lowly, cowardly act”
MP & former Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara 'warns' Tamil MPs : "They must learn to behave. They have gotten bold enough to stand up to the Police now. If this continues they need to be arrested and held in detention without bail."
Harassment of #Tamil nationalist political activists continue unabated following the arrest by police & release by judge of @GGPonnambalam after he was threatened by a #SriLanka policeman
Everybody has the right to seek asylum & find safe refuge, having fled violence, persecution or war at home.
Wherever they may come from, I stand #WithRefugees.
Same DIG in charge of Rambukkana when a bystander was killed in police shooting last year. Internal investigation shows 2 special branch cops were responsible for sparking the Murthankerny incident. SC can give ruling even without hearing FR petition.
