New paper alert!🦎Across eight lizard species, we find that animals use different microhabitats for sleep and activity, selecting sleep sites that reduce predation risk and optimize temperature and humidity. #SleepEcology#Herpetology

🦌 Spotted deer nibbling away mangroves in the Andamans are stalling forest recovery post the 2004 tsunami.
🦌 Introduced by the British, these deer now threaten mangrove diversity, says @nehrutp. "The mangroves should have recovered after the tsunami, but they didn’t."

An interesting study (by @NityaPM, S. Harikrishnan, @ksivakumarwii and Karthikeyan Vasudevan) found that the spotted deer, an alien species introduced by the British, is now causing a reduction in the lizard population on the Andaman archipelago.
~Spotted Deer, Lizards & Colonialism~
There's been much discussion about colonialism's impact on India, but one often overlooked aspect is its effect on the region's ecology.
Really bad move of one of my favourite journals 🙁 I hope the @BritishEcolSoc reconsiders this decision –it only contributes to increasing inequality (Yes, I have read the answer about Research4Life and 50% waivers, but this is bad news, mostly to the #GlobalSouth, regardless!)!

Sleep occurs across animals, yet we know almost nothing about interactions among sleep, ecology, and environmental change. Our new systematic review led by Helena Norman reviews sleep in fish and avenues for future research in this fascinating field: https://t.co/knN7q6I7Hk
Yes. The age limit of 35 is bogus and needs to go.
This is 2024 for crying out loud.
I am surprised that there hasn't been any public interest litigation around this.
