My comment on the 'Final Official Day' of COP29
"On this last official day of COP29, we are frustrated, angry, and exhausted by decades of games played by developed countries. This was supposed to be the ‘Finance COP’ — a moment to agree on new climate finance goals critical for our planet’s survival. Instead, we’re trapped in deadlock and deep divisions.
"Developing nations are demanding $1.3 trillion annually to confront the climate crisis, and even the latest draft acknowledges the need for trillions. Yet, after three years and countless high-level meetings, developed countries have offered nothing — not a single figure. Their priority remains profits, profits, and more profits, all at the expense of global equity and justice.
"This bad-faith negotiating by wealthy nations is not just a dangerous waste of precious time; it is a grave betrayal. The consequences are real: rising seas, scorched lands, and millions of lives at risk. Now, we’re going into overtime yet again — hours, maybe days — because justice and fairness have been kicked down the road for far too long. The world is watching, and history will not forget."

7/ Big thanks to @orfonline for giving us the platform to contribute. A special shoutout to @Gopalika95, our editor, whose guidance shaped this publication. This work is a small part of the global call for action on climate adaptation. 🌏
6/ The #LossAndDamage Fund needs to be scalable, accessible, and responsive to the evolving needs of vulnerable populations. At its core must be equity – ensuring that the nations least responsible for climate change are supported to recover and build resilience. 🌱
5/ We focus on equity and justice highlighyting that developed countries, who are historically responsible for most #GHG emissions, must step up to address the damage they've caused. We need a financing approach that goes beyond support to truly compensate for past harms. ⚖️
4/ The #LossandDamage Fund established at #COP28 was a crucial step forward in supporting climate adaptation & recovery. But, the fund's implementation faces challenges, eligibility issues, bureaucratic hurdles, and difficulty quantifying non-economic losses. 🏛️
2/ The paper highlights the urgent need for effective financing mechanisms to address #climatechange impacts, especially for developing countries that bear the brunt of climate vulnerabilities and communities that already face escalating economic & non-economic damages💸
3/ By 2030, economic losses from climate-related disasters could reach up to $580 billion per year in developing countries. In India, 70% of agricultural households are struggling due to frequent droughts & extreme weather, with ecosystems like Himalayan glaciers also at risk.🏞️
1/ 🧵Happy to share insights from our latest contribution to the @orfonline's compendium "Funding Our Future: Unlocking Resources for Adaptation Financing". Our paper, co-authored with @harjeet11, is titled "Loss and Damage Finance: Progress, Realities, and the Waiting Game."🌍
