The Sussexes’ Nottingham charity event exposes a truth the Royal Rota would rather avoid: you cannot manufacture public affection through favourable headlines, managed appearances, or endless attempts to control the narrative.

Genuine connection cannot be scripted, and authenticity cannot be faked.

The world has changed. The public no longer relies on a handful of royal correspondents to decide whom it should admire. Social media has broken that monopoly. People can witness events, share experiences, challenge narratives, and form their own opinions.

Instead of endlessly scrutinising Harry and Meghan, perhaps the real question is why William and Kate’s carefully managed public image inspires such relentless efforts at comparison.

You cannot lecture people into admiration or manufacture warmth through PR.

The greatest threat to a carefully curated image is a public that no longer needs permission to see through it.
