Ugandan authorities have announced plans to drop the military trial against opposition leader Kizza Besigye and transfer his case to a civilian court, a move they say is in compliance with a Supreme Court ruling that declared such trials for civilians unconstitutional, though the pledge has been met with scepticism from his family and supporters.
His wife Winnie Byanyima who serves as the executive director of UNAIDS has, however, dismissed the government's pledge to transfer his case from a military to a civilian court, calling the move "highly suspicious" and holding authorities responsible for his deteriorating health after nearly a week on hunger strike.
She has accused the government of using deceptive tactics to manage public outrage while continuing to suppress political opposition ahead of the 2026 elections.
Besigye, a longtime critic of President Yoweri Museveni, has been on a hunger strike since February 10 in protest against his detention on treason charges, which the government claims stem from alleged threats to national security, despite a Supreme Court ruling declaring the military trial of civilians unconstitutional.

We have called him a conman. Accused him of betrayal. Labelled him the laundry on Capitol Hill towers, etc. Nonetheless,
Raila remains the foremost politician in Kenya with unmatched reformist and statesmanship credentials. When it comes to a crunch & the nation teeters on the brink, he has sacrificed his ideals to step back & unify the nation. In all those situations, he came out with more than he delivered. But for many politicians that look upon him, his occasional strategic retreat leaves them in a quandary. He is indeed the enigma in Kenyan politics!
