Honestly, I'm pretty sure this is part of what Pimp C was talking about in his legendary (and unfortunately, one of his last) phone interview: "there's no more social commentary in the records." And Vince Staples seemingly confirmed this when talking about what he grew up on.
Listening back to old southern rap albums the last couple days is crazy cause idk when street rappers stopped being aware of systemic issues causing their situations in acute ways. Juvenile was calling out Bob Dole and Medicare reform policies by name
In 1995, this was all over the radio (at least in PG/DC/NoVa), MTV Jams, The Box and BET for like a month and a half during the summer.
That Craig Mack bar saying, "taste some defeat" is underrated, been in my head for 30 plus years. RIP.
This is EXACTLY how I feel about the City. As a Commanders fan, I can say I don't love the Eagles, he'll, I don't even HATE them. But I have nothing but respect for that City and how they rep their squads.
Yesterday in Philly a six-year-old girl in the back of a car rolled down the window and yelled “boooooo” at me because I was in Philadelphia wearing a commanders shirt. She was smiling so big it was amazing she didn’t have any hate or anything. She just knew her mission and she accomplished it and that’s what I love about sports . it was the absolute greatest moment. I don’t love the Eagles, but I love Philadelphia.
Fun Fact: Betty Davis wrote, arranged, and produced every track herself at 28 — one of the first Black women to fully self-produce a major-label funk album.
@365CharlesParis Amazing. The only song I could do without is "Sell Out." "On My Block" is a song that still gets me emotional to this day. And I can't watch the damn video, STILL.
@TonyDaDome Yes. Folks keep talking about him getting in his own way, but that's for stuff outside the work. The work alone should stand there.
Personally, I think he just came along at a time (blog era) where the "Big 3" just shined larger.
