California’s agricultural industry feeds the nation - over 1/3 of the nation’s vegetables and 3/4 of its fruits & nuts are grown here in CA. They’ve also paid almost $148 million in #PAGA suits since 2013.

According to Labor Commissioners’ PAGA Unit, the majority of settlements they reviewed “fell short of protecting the interests of the state and workers.” To protect workers, #caleg needs to reform #PAGA ASAP and put cases back in the hands of the state.
CA employers have spent $8 billion on #PAGA suits since 2016. That’s enough $$ to buy Buckingham Palace. In 5 years, you could buy Buckingham Palace twice.
Many businesses are re-targeted by lawyers after settling a #PAGA claim. There's no limit to # of PAGA claims that can be filed against an employer. With billions of dollars at stake, trial lawyers will go after the same employer multiple times to continue to get large payouts.
Since 1965, California has reigned as the #1 state for manufacturing in the nation. It’s also paid out over $875 million in PAGA cases in less than 10 years. CA needs serious PAGA reforms in the #caleg to keep CA employers and workers protected from #shakedowns.
Disappointed with Adolph v. Uber outcome - a ruling that paves the way for increased PAGA filings, lining attorney pockets at the expense of workers & employers. @NoShakedowns and @bizfedcv remain committed to pushing for #PAGA reform to create better outcomes for business.
“[PAGA] has become a vehicle for shakedowns against every employer, non-profit, unions, businesses – you name it. Pretty much everyone has been victimized by PAGA. And if you haven’t yet… it’s just a matter of time.” -@CNCDA Prez on #PAGA if #caleg doesn't act.
The health care & social assistance industry paid over $932 MILLION in #PAGA cases from 2013-2022. Less funded hospitals & nursing facilities will exacerbate CA’s already crushing provider shortage. #caleg: time to take a serious look at reforming PAGA.
Trial attorneys act as serial filer bounty hunters – they ID industries with companies or nonprofits that employ many employees and move from employer to employer in the industry, hitting as many businesses with #PAGA filings as they can.
Typo on a paystub? Trial lawyers weaponize minor errors w/ no financial harm to workers to create big paydays – for themselves. Lawyers take 1/3 of settlements, & employees make 4x LESS vs state recoveries. #PAGA math doesn’t work out in anyone’s favor – except trial attys.
“You’re going to see just a few dollars,” says @CNCDA Prez on low employee recovery under #PAGA. Listen to the Stop Shakedowns Chair discuss PAGA on the @catrux podcast here: https://t.co/EI7IhJ0jkl

Stop the Shakedowns wants to hold bad actors accountable and get workers paid – not lawyers. #shakedown attorneys have made a business shaking down employers while workers get pennies. #caleg needs to protect workers’ and employers’ interests over attorneys’ bottom lines.
Confusion over #PAGA is holding up court cases – delaying worker’s payout. Gov. Newsom and the #caleg can simplify the system and get more $$ to workers by putting workers’ cases back in the state regulator’s hands.
Under the current #PAGA system, lawyers take 1/3 of all settlements, even if there’s not enough for workers to get paid properly. We need the #caleg to step in and ensure that trial attys are not the only winners.
ICYMI: @Blaw highlighted #StopShakedowns amicus brief in recent article highlighting the lack of clarity in current court cases with PAGA filings in the mix. @CalChamber quoted on explosion of PAGA settlements in recent years. https://t.co/FRDG2AKBg8
PAGA has turned into a profit-driven industry, benefiting only the lawyers who file lawsuits with billions of $$. Workers, non-profits and businesses suffer. The #caleg needs to reform #PAGA and put these cases back with independent regulators.
