@nucaica People need to adjust to their environment. Respecting your neighbours is an obligation. That means playing loud music is unacceptable at any time. This is #NeighbourNoiseViolence … If you asked a household member to be quiet then they would. Then why not your neighbour?
@NoiseNeighbour@XochitltheG@TheAtlantic@JohnJohnStewart Here is a link to the article. Certainly there is little awareness in it of the devastating impact noise can have on a person. It's not simply that some people 'love quiet'. https://t.co/t76BzbGXzl
Not really. Sounds in the city are harmful. Supported by scientific research. It’s unfortunate the author does not understand. Unwanted noise is also harmful to study and learning outcomes.
@TheAtlantic@XochitltheG I’m not rich. I love the quiet. I think beyond race it has to do with one’s childhood environment—what feels like home to us. I grew up in a quiet Midwestern small town. Quiet is my restoration. For someone who grew up in NYC, maybe sounds of vibrant city life equal the same
@allisonwilens@TheAtlantic@XochitltheG Noise cameras are used in cities around the world to combat the proven fact that excessive noise is a public health hazard.many support the idea here in NYC,too, since noise complaints are top quality of life complaint to 311, especially in many non-gentrified nabes.
@sloanekalifaye@TheAtlantic@XochitltheG But not at the expense of your health. Cultural freedom must include respect. If someone asks you to be quiet you comply out of respect. The scientific research into the profound harmful effects of neighbour noise are culturally neutral. Noise is noise. Quiet is a human right.
@goofygoddess84@ShoeDaydreams@TheAtlantic@XochitltheG NYC noise campaigner Dr Arline Bronzaft who did studies on noise and how it can drastically reduce students learning outcomes in the 1970’s would surely agree.
@fyrescotch @XochitltheG@jfurf@TheAtlantic That is so true. We all have a human right to peace and quiet. The people making noise out of joy do not get to choose whether it is or is not harmful. If someone asks a person making unwanted noise to be quiet and they continue making noise it is a form of torture rich or poor.
@XochitltheG@jfurf@TheAtlantic Wanting peace and quiet is not a selfish desire. Making noise is a selfish desire. I have campaigned for years against unwanted noise. And you cannot make objective judgements about what is unwanted noise. High information content noise is the key. It’s harmful to human health.
@TheAtlantic@XochitltheG@QuietCoalition Please read this article on noise and how wrong it is on so many levels. Being subject to unwanted noise is absolute hell for the sufferers. And @TheAtlantic helps perpetuate this suffering. Everyone deserves quiet if they want quiet. It is a #humanright.
@TheAtlantic@XochitltheG Wrong on many levels. @TheAtlantic withdraw this article. The rich may love quiet. the poor love quiet too. And for good reason. Unwanted noise, supported by a plethora of scientific research is a health hazard. Also reduced learning outcomes. See NYC researcher Arline Bronzaft
@XochitltheG@TheAtlantic Please withdraw this article. This article is offensive to all noise sufferers. Neighbour noise has profoundly harmful health effects supported by a plethora of scientific evidence. See UK Noise Association @cutnoise@JohnJohnStewart WHO LARES Report etc
@XochitltheG@TheAtlantic@diana_weinhold “Our results indicate that neighbour noise annoyance is associated with increased likelihood of cardiovascular disease, auto-immune diseases of bones and joints, fatigue and headaches, and perhaps blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
@AppleNews@XochitltheG@TheAtlantic No scientific basis. Absolutely atrocious. Shame on @TheAtlantic Researchers from Diana Weinhold https://t.co/UMNplWFzVc Dr Niemann & Dr Maschke WHO LARES Report 2004 https://t.co/7jQBQis7DM and Dr Arlene Bronzaft would all be horrified at your article. Inconsiderate. #Remove
@XochitltheG Scientific evidence? “Overall we find surprisingly strong and robust effects of residential noise annoyance on a variety of health out-comes, including cardio-vascular symptoms, auto-immune conditions associated with joint and bone disease, headache, and fatigue”
Dr. Arline Bronzaft tells us about NYC councilmember Erik Bottcher who has introduced legislation that would double existing fines for excessively loud cars, but says that while enhanced laws are good, enforcement is key. https://t.co/4ePcIFjDsw
@engineers_feed Leaf blowers!! The ultimate noise pollution machine: (1) annoy all your neighbours all day long (2) blow micro dust particles all over the place incl. pollen (3) useless when there's a breeze (4) gardeners can "look busy". Leaf blowers are now BANNED in some European countries.
This is unacceptable. Would they say the same thing if it was their own household member who wanted quiet because they needed to sleep, study, rest, relax, work? The would be answer is no. This is #NeighbourNoiseViolence
When the noise coming from upstairs feels 'unmanageable' but your neighbour says its just her daughter playing Barbies https://t.co/uiiYxvOwVn via @BurnabyNOW_News
This maybe fun but what about the sleepless neighbours who have to drive/work the next day. Not having sufficient sleep is equivalent to drunk driving. The Police should know better. They should be preventing potential #Trauma not contributing.
California deputies responding to a noise complaint by neighbours during a Punjabi wedding couldn’t resist the tunes and ended up joining in on the fun
#NeighbourNoise is a known health hazard comparable to a history of smoking. This is science. How can you be so horrible to your neighbours? If a household member asked you to stop making noise you would. Why not for your neighbours?
@chappjay So sorry to hear about this, the problem is that you cannot really catch up on lost sleep according to science. Noise and lack of sleep is linked to many chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, headaches, fatigue etc. You are right, it’s torture.
