Hundreds of Zimbabwean Nationals Have Been Camping Outside Mankweng Police Station in Polokwane For 3 Weeks After Alleged Evictions From Ther Rented Accommodations

Hundreds of Zimbabwean nationals, including women and young children, have spent weeks camping outside the Mankweng Police Station near Polokwane after allegedly being evicted from rented accommodation in Mankweng, Mamadimo Park and Seshego.

The displacement reportedly followed pressure from some community members, while landlords allegedly raised concerns about possible penalties or fines linked to accommodating undocumented foreign nationals. The situation left families seeking temporary refuge outside the police station while authorities worked to address their circumstances.

Officials from South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs, together with the Zimbabwean Embassy, established verification processes at the police station to confirm the identities of those affected and assist with issuing emergency travel documentation to verified Zimbabwean nationals.

Following the verification process, Zimbabwean authorities and local stakeholders arranged buses to transport verified individuals from Mankweng to the Beitbridge Border Post for return processing. Limpopo SAPS deployed multidisciplinary teams around the police station to maintain order, provide security for families and assist with managing the situation, including sanitation arrangements during the processing period.

Bafowethu, I keep coming back to this video of the woman whose identity was allegedly stolen in the Chidimma case.

Listen to what she says about what she went through struggling to get her own matric results, being unable to access university and the opportunities that should have been hers.

And then you start asking yourself: what else did she lose because of an identity that was allegedly taken from her? This is bigger than a beauty pageant. There is a real human being on the other side of that identity, and the consequences can last for years.

That is the part of this story we should never forget.

Following the evidence:

Chidimma claims that she grew up in Soweto, but so far, there is no publicly available evidence confirming that she was born at Bara.

- No birth records have been produced, yet she has a South African ID.
- It has been claimed that the family had no neighbours.

This weekend, we will conduct a study in the township where she claims to have grown up and examine these claims against the available evidence.
