Meet Mluleki Nkululeko Mthethwa, a driven and accomplished Marine Engineer whose journey began at uMfolozi TVET College. With the support and assistance of SAIMI, he secured a position with Oldendorff, a renowned German dry bulk carrier company.

My journey into Engineering began in 2017 at uMfolozi TVET College, Esikhawini Campus, where I pursued Electrical Engineering (Report 191) from N2 to N6 and completed it by 2018. That academic foundation opened the door to a new adventure—Maritime Engineering.

In 2019, I enrolled into the newly launched Maritime Engineering programme at uMfolozi TVET College -Maritime Academy. The curriculum was intense and hands-on, covering pre-sea training and S-modules. These experiences sharpened my technical skills and prepared me for the realities of the maritime industry.

By 2022, I was accepted into the National Seafarer Development Programme (NSDP) where I completed additional pre-sea training and earned my STCW certifications. The NSDP, managed by the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI), facilitated my pre-sea training and sea time training.

In 2023, I joined Oldendorff, a German dry bulk carrier company, and spent 14 months at sea aboard two vessels with a multinational crew. I completed my cadetship in 2024 and passed my Oral Examination in August 2025, officially qualifying as a Marine Engineer Class III.

I have also recently been assigned to rejoin Oldendorff as an Engine Officer of the Watch. I’m extremely grateful to uMfolozi College and SAIMI for believing in my potential. I hope my journey inspires others to pursue their dreams—no matter how far they may seem - Mfolozi TVET College
