Hey, publishing hivemind: what's your opinion of the f-word in YA? I tend to fall on the side of "probably okay as long as it's in character and not too frequent or gratuitous," but in the current book-banning climate I'd love to see other people's intuitions
@SecretFormulaNY My wife and I were at the time travel AfterDark in September and can't remember the name of a cartoon. It was a very trippy time-loop episode where everyone was wearing bondage gear. The line "time is in the mind" came up. Do you remember the name?
@KateAMcMullen So when I'm in the mood to cook I usually look up a fun recipe online to try out, often inspired by an interesting ingredient I found from one of Queens' many multicultural grocery stores. But also the thing I cook most often is my mom's chili recipe lol
@SWekstein I'm realizing my fave recent adult reads have been more SF than F, but if you're up for that, highly recommend both THE SPACE BETWEEN WORLDS and BATTLE OF THE LINGUIST MAGES (for very different reasons lol)
My editor pet peeve (and I promise I’m saying this to be helpful, not to be mean!!) is MG and YA books that are set in the 70s, 80s, or 90s for no reason other than that’s when the author was a kid
In 1922, neighbours heard screams coming from a house in the affluent LA area of Layfette Park. When the police arrived, they found Fred Oesterreich dead & his wife Dolly locked inside in a closet. They were certain Dolly had done it, but they had no idea how.

Look, I like rom-coms, unapologetically. This was a good rom-com, plus it went to a sex-positive, "edgy" place without feeling gratuitous, plus it had some nuanced things to say about how different queer ppl package their identities for the straights, plus the cast was incredible
In talking about how cruelly @billyeichner, white, cis, rich, hot- or not-hot-enough-to-be-a-movie-star (depending on who's tweeting) demanded the queer community support his movie, a thing that is rarely mentioned is the rest of the cast.
Seeing that #LGBWithTheT is trending, let me add my bit from the niche angle of an amateur scholar of queer history, focusing on lesbian-adjacent figures.
In my experience and in my opinion, there is no lesbian history without trans history. 1/n
Okay everything about this is false, but also does JCO think that…only teenagers like character-driven stories? Like, JCO *writes* character-driven stories, are those all YA?
Why is anyone wasting their breath arguing that a "mermaid shouldn't be black" when instead you could be talking about the time Hans Christian Andersen showed up as a guest at Charles Dickens's house and absolutely ruined his life for a month straight
It’s publication day for If Nietzsche Were a Narwhal! https://t.co/qGZHs1e0rK a HUGE thank you @pronoydsarkar, @lisadimona, and everyone at @littlebrown!
