According to Microsoft, the GDID is used for security purposes,The company says it is not used for advertising or tracking users across apps and websites.

Unlike advertising IDs, the GDID cannot be disabled or reset by users, as it is designed to remain tied to the device for its lifetime.

A Brazilian PC gamer says he successfully sued Microsoft after his account was blocked and he was told to repurchase his digital games.

According to the user, a Brazilian court ruled that Microsoft must restore access to his account within 15 days or face daily fines.
The court also ordered the company to pay R$2,000 (around US$400) in compensation for moral damages.

The court document states that Microsoft must unblock the account linked to the user’s email and return access to all games and content associated with it.

As someone who also played the game, this character development ends up happening whether you play the side quest or not and you have no say in the matter.

It's WORSE there's no actual point. It was going to happen without your say so and the game demands you participate.
