@Newman_BJ If he was making that claim with no reason I would agree, but he has a reason, and the claim follows logically from his reason. If that is slander as slanderous to dismiss him as sinful when he is speaking to a sincere belief according to his conscience.

I think Zoomer is persuasive that the tactic was inprudent but not persuasive that it was objectively sinful.

@Newman_BJ He is arguing that he isn't faithful because he is leaving the institution of faithful which has just jurisdiction, allowing those heretics to control Christ's church. The argument is that fidelity to christ would include retaking the institution for the faithful within it.

@damespjuffy They were a violent threat but not necessarily immediate or actively plotting like the two suitors we follow. The killing was necessary to give the crown to Telemachus and sustain the kingdom but not quite just, which is why Odysseus accepted exile.

@damespjuffy I think Nolan did a good job because he focused on two suitors where it was clearly just for them to die. I don't think anyone nowadays would view Odysseus' actions in the books as justice, even though Greeks at the time would probably view it as just.

@damespjuffy I would say more than too much food, a grotesque misuse of his hospitality. All also hoped to take his place, and the assumption is they wouldn't stop when he returned.

I wouldn't say evil, but it was... Very harsh, and preemptive, protecting the kingdom for his son.

@damespjuffy I also think if he could have killed Antinous justly but there wasn't any hard proof of Antinous' plot to kill Telemachus. The other suitors weren't involved in a plot to kill Telemachus so that is different.

@damespjuffy I think that the movie differs from Xenia in making it a violation, but the proper punishment for abusing Zeus' law was dismissal not death. The killing was more about stopping future plots. The 'proper' way prior to the fall of Troy would have gotten Odysseus killed later.
