56 years ago today, Black Panther leader and revolutionary Fred Hampton was assassinated in his bed by Chicago police. He was 21 years old.

Raised in a working class, racially segregated neighborhood of Chicago, Hampton became radicalized in college during the Civil Rights Movement. As Chairman of the Chicago BPP, he helped to develop and lead community programs such as the free breakfast for children program and health clinics. He’s often remembered for his efforts to build multinational unity between Black and other oppressed communities and
movements.

Fred Hampton taught us that the future we want to see — free of capitalist exploitation and white supremacy — will only come if we fight for it.
