Too many to remember
Prof. Kola Oyewo taught me from 100 Level through 400 Level. He was an exceptional lecturer and also served as my pioneer Head of Department.
What an incredible man. I have so many stories to tell and so many lessons to remember.
Thank you for being an outstanding teacher, mentor, and Father.
Rest well, Pa Kola Oyewo.ποΈ π€
Veteran Nigerian actor, theatre icon, and scholar, Baba Kola Oyewo, has passed away, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that spans over six decades in the performing arts and academia.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Kola Oyewo began his acting career in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. He went on to become one of the most respected and influential figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigerian film.
He was widely celebrated for his unforgettable portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi's The Gods Are Not to Blame, a role that brought him recognition across the African theatre scene.
Throughout his illustrious career, Oyewo featured in numerous productions, including Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, Super Story, and several Yoruba-language films that contributed significantly to the growth and development of Nigeria's movie industry.
Beyond acting, he was a distinguished academic who earned a doctorate degree in Drama from the University of Ibadan and taught at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer's University, and Elizade University.
Through his work as an actor, educator, and mentor, Baba Kola Oyewo inspired and guided generations of actors, playwrights, and scholars, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria's theatre, film, and academic communities.
May his soul rest in peace.
So sad to hear about the death of Pa Kola Oyewo.
Memories of Koseegbe, Saworoide, Oleku just flooded my head. He gave us amazing screen moments.
We lost a veteran, an icon.
Veteran Nollywood actor, theatre icon, and scholar, Chief Dr. Kola Oyewo died at 80 years.
Dr. Oyewo's passing was announced by his family.
He was a revered figure in Nigerian theatre and film, who dedicated his life to the arts, culture, and mentoring generations of performers.
He will be remembered for the memorable characters he played in iconic top class movies like Saworoide, The gods are not blamed, Koseegbe among others.
Rest on, Chief
One of the fascinating stories about Baba ws that he transitioned from being a Non Academic staff to academic in Obafemi Awolowo University by getting admission to study Dramatic Arts- and, I think, his son was even a year ahead of him.
He became a lecturer & rose to the very pinnacle of his academic career.
Those who have never seen him on stage didn't see the best of him. Cameras did not do him enough justice.
He played Kabiyesi in Soyinka's DEATH & THE KING'S HORSEMAN at a command performance in Oduduwa hall & someone missed his lines. He didn't even skip the expression on his face to recover to get the dialogue back in.
A worthy Ife Alumnus, a consummate thespian & a man of culture.
E Sun re o, Baba.
