A U.S. Power Capacity Gap Is Emerging
U.S. electricity demand is accelerating faster than generation capacity.
By 2028, peak demand is projected at ~1,160 GW versus ~1,158 GW of available supply. Under higher-growth scenarios driven by AI data centers, advanced manufacturing, and electrification, peak demand could exceed forecasts materially.
By 2033, the capacity gap could widen to ~175 GW, with peak demand reaching ~1,229 GW while peak supply declines toward ~1,128 GW. This represents a non-trivial risk to grid reliability, reserve margins, and outage frequency.
The system constraint is structural, not cyclical. Intermittent generation does not address peak firmness. Gas faces fuel and permitting constraints. Transmission buildout timelines exceed demand growth.
The system needs firm, dispatchable, fast-to-deploy power.
