Nine months after the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources revoked the lease of a licensed mining company in Prestea-Huni Valley, the mine is now being fully operated by a group of illegal miners connected to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Led by Ebenezer Amemegakpor, an NDC activist in the Prestea-Huni Valley Constituency, the illegal miners took over RMG Mining Company’s Apinto concession in March 2025 after National Security stormed the underground mine.

The amount of rainfall recorded today is among the highest experienced in several years. Preliminary data indicates that approximately 140 millimetres of rain fell on Accra. By comparison, the highest single-day rainfall recorded last year was about 56 millimetres.

That aspect of the problem is beyond our control because it is driven by changing climatic conditions. There is the issue of human behaviour.

Whenever government begins removing structures built in waterways, some people accuse us of being inhumane. Yet when disasters such as today's flooding occur, the consequences affect everyone. The irresponsible actions of a few individuals end up putting entire communities at risk.

If people are building in waterways, who gave them permits? Who looked away? Who failed to demolish illegal structures before floods came? Citizens may break the law but government is paid to stop lawlessness before it becomes disaster. This government is failing us!

My position on flooding will never change.

It is not enough to keep blaming ordinary people.

There’s this constant narrative that Ghanaians are the cause of all our own problems, but that ignores a critical part of the story.

We have institutions whose job it is to enforce planning regulations, prevent illegal developments, protect waterways, ensure proper waste disposal and act before disasters happen.

When they fail to do that, the consequences are borne by all of us .

Yes, individual responsibility matters. But so does institutional responsibility.

It is really unfair to reduce a complex problem to, “Ghanaians are the cause of their own suffering,” when there are systems that were created precisely to prevent these failures.

I won’t lie, years ago I probably held that same simplistic view. But the more I’ve learned, the more my perspective has evolved.

Flooding is rarely the result of one person’s actions, it’s the ripple effect of years of weak enforcement, poor planning, institutional failure, and individual irresponsibility.

Until we’re willing to hold EVERYONE accountable, not just the public, we’ll keep having the same conversation every rainy season.

That is like blaming drivers for speeding when police, cameras, road signs, and penalties are all missing. We didn’t vote for speeches. We voted for solutions. If citizens are breaking the law, enforce the law. If gutters are choked, clear them. If buildings are in waterways, remove them. Governance is action, not commentary.

Children can’t dance in the rain anymore, we all run for shelter, even cars aren’t safe.

What people don’t know is that boys are equally molested in our schools everyday.

You think it’s only the girl child at risk so when these conversations come up, your immediate reaction is to trivialize it.

Even worse is when it’s a female teacher with a little boy, you think it’s “cool”.

Until you hear how male teachers are equally abusing boys, that’s when you get fired up.
