The candidate in question is Sagal Abdi-Wali, who fled Somalia with her family in the early 1990s as a child refugee and has lived in Camden ever since.

She was elected as a Labour councillor in 2022, became leader of Camden Council after May's local elections, and was previously chairwoman of Starmer's own constituency Labour Party.

She is, by any ordinary measure, and completely unlike unelected shameless liar Muhammad Ziauddin Yusuf, a known local figure with a mandate from the borough she now hopes to represent in Parliament.

None of that appears in Yusuf's tweet. What appears is a birthplace, stripped of the seven decades of British residency, elected office and political relationships that surround it, presented as though the birthplace alone answers the grotesque rhetorical question "do you understand what's happening?"

Let's speculate about what it might look like if the same rhetorical move were applied consistently.

Boris Johnson was born in New York City in 1964, while his father was working there. He held US citizenship until 2016. He went on to become Mayor of London, Foreign Secretary and UK PM, at one point simultaneously eligible to be taxed by a foreign government while holding the highest office in this one.

Nobody on the right built a tweet around his birth certificate.

Nobody asked, of a Tory PM born abroad and carrying dual nationality into Downing Street, whether the public 'understood what was happening'.

The difference isn't the fact of foreign birth. It's whose foreign birth gets flagged as a legitimacy question and whose is treated as a biographical footnote.

A white politician born in New York is a curiosity.

A Black woman born in Somalia, who arrived as a refugee and spent thirty years building a life and a political career in this country, is framed as something being "foisted" on an unwitting electorate.

That word, 'foisted', is doing the devil's work. It implies imposition rather than selection, something done TO Holborn's voters rather than BY them, through their own party's selection process.

It denies the possibility that a Somali-born refugee could simply be the strongest, most locally rooted candidate on her own merits, and insists instead that her presence requires an external explanation, some Labour machination working against the public's real preferences.

It's a familiar pattern in how migration and belonging get discussed in British political discourse: origin as an ever-present asterisk, never fully erased no matter how long the residency, how deep the local roots, or how conventional the route into public life.

Johnson's New York birth was erased by time and treated as irrelevant. Abdi-Wali's Somali birth is treated as the whole story.

Yusuf was born in Bellshill, Scotland in 1986, to parents who had emigrated from Sri Lanka in the early 1980s. His father was a paediatrician and his mother a nurse, both career #NHS staff who built a life in Britain within living memory of the one he now questions Abdi-Wali for building.

Strip his biography down to its bare structure and it is not so different from hers: an immigrant family, public sector work, a British-born or British-raised figure going on to a prominent role in national life.

The difference is that Yusuf gets to be simply British, the unelected chairman of a political party, spokesperson for its 1930s Germany-style policy positions, while Abdi-Wali gets a tweet asking 3.6 million people whether they understand what's happening.

Finally, Reform's relationship to Somali identity, it turns out, is not one of blanket suspicion. Nigel Farage has supported UK recognition of Somaliland as an independent state since at least 2015. When Israel recognised Somaliland in December 2025, Farage publicly welcomed the move, posting that "Somaliland deserves this status."

On 14 January 2026 he went further, attending and addressing a Somaliland community rally outside Downing Street, telling the crowd they were gaining public trust in Britain, that he was "with you all the way," and praising their persistent campaigning before urging them to keep fighting for their cause.

This is a Reform leader standing in front of a Somali diaspora community, courting its favour and its votes.

This sits uneasily next to his own spokesperson's tweet three weeks later, treating a Somali-born woman's rise to a parliamentary candidacy as a threat requiring public alarm.

The Somali cause is welcome when it costs Reform nothing and flatters a foreign policy position. A Somali-born woman seeking power inside Britain is treated as something else entirely.

Some other prominent Somali-British figures currently living in Britain:

Sir Mo Farah: four-time Olympic gold medallist, knighted, arguably the most famous. Born in Somaliland, brought to the UK as a child (his 2022 BBC documentary revealed he'd actually been trafficked into the country under a false identity).

Rageh Omaar: journalist and writer, born in Hargeisa, moved to the UK aged two, former BBC world affairs correspondent, now an ITV News presenter.

Nadifa Mohamed: novelist; her debut Black Mamba Boy won the 2010 Betty Trask Award and was shortlisted for several major prizes.

Warsan Shire: poet, raised in London, known for work used in Beyoncé's Lemonade.

Nimco Ali: activist and campaigner against FGM, previously a government adviser.

Ramla Ali: professional boxer, competed at the Tokyo Olympics.

Adam Matan OBE: activist, founder of the Anti-Tribalism Movement.

Hashi Mohamed: barrister, broadcaster and writer on social mobility.

Mark Hendrick: Labour MP for Preston, though his Somali heritage is less central to his public profile than the others.
