Nyale Institute is a non-governmental organisation established in 2013 to advance gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Malawi
AC, a Minor is an important case in the reproductive justice conversation, particularly for how it brings dignity and mental health into focus.
The principles applied in this matter have relevance beyond Malawi. Other jurisdictions can draw from them when considering how laws, policies, and decisions affecting reproductive health should account for a person’s dignity, mental well-being, and lived reality.
Together with @nyaleinstitute, the lead partners in the litigation, we believe that Reproductive justice must recognise not only the right to access care, but also the dignity and well-being of the people at the centre of these decisions.
Congratulations to Dr. Godfrey Dalitso Kangaude on his appointment as a Commissioner of the Ninth Cohort of the Human Rights Commission of Malawi.
Nyale Institute celebrates this milestone and wishes him success in advancing and protecting human rights in Malawi.

Young people are turning knowledge into action!
From 13–15 July, youth leaders in Mulanje are leading SRHR advocacy sessions under the “ Mwana Wa Nzako Ngwako Yemwe Campaign”, while engaging traditional leaders to strengthen support for girls' reproductive justice.
Dr. Kangaude issued a clear and urgent call!
States across Africa must collectively decriminalize access to safe abortion for child survivors of sexual violence. Malawi has set a precedence in the AC Minor case, where courts ruled that child survivors of sexual violence have an automatic right to access abortion services.
He reiterated that criminalizing abortion for children contradicts the very rights frameworks African states have committed to uphold.
Today, Nyale Institute has launched a 5-day training on the SRHR Advocacy Manual in Mulanje District under the #MwanaWaMzakoNgwakoYemwe Campaign.
Young people will gain advocacy, communication and community mobilisation skills to champion #SRHR and drive positive change

@MalawiLII In AC (a minor) v The Attorney General and Others, the Court ruled that denying a child survivor safe abortion care violated her rights under Sections 19 & 20 of the Gender Equality Act.
A major step toward enforcing the GEA in practice. 💪
