There are 3 major components in a video game:

Mechanics
Story
Graphics

If you have to pick only 2 that are exceptional - pick mechanics and story.

I don't believe there has ever been a game in the history of gaming where someone has said "the story and the mechanics were awful, but the graphics were so good, I couldn't stop".

On the other hand there are games with bad mechanics and bad graphics, but the story captivated a group of stubborn people to the point they slogged through anyway.

And games where the story and graphics were bad, but the mechanics were so fun people kept playing.

Good graphics without good story or good mechanics to go with it mean nothing.

However, bad graphics become far more noticeable when the mechanics and story both suck.
