In 1855, an enslaved teenager named Celia fought back against the man who had repeatedly raped her for years.

Celia had been purchased at about 14 years old by Robert Newsom, a white slaveholder in Missouri.

According to historical records, Newsom repeatedly raped her for approximately five years. She warned him to stop and sought help, but the abuse continued.

On the night of 23 June 1855, Newsom entered Celia's cabin and attempted to sexually assault her again. Celia resisted. During the struggle, she struck him with a heavy stick, killing him.

Celia was arrested, tried, convicted of murder, and sentenced to death.

Her defense argued that she had the right to defend herself against sexual assault. The court rejected that argument, effectively denying an enslaved woman the same right to bodily autonomy and self-defense recognized for other women.

Celia was 19 years old when she was hanged on 21 December 1855.

Her story is a brutal reminder of the violence of slavery — and of the courage of those who resisted it.

Celia did not accept slavery's claim over her body. She fought back. And for that resistance, the slave state killed her.
